Eco-chic meets effortless bright colored lips
I happened upon this lipstick almost the same way I found my husband. It was by pure chance, our paths perhaps never to cross again. And yes, it was love at first sight.
My husband and I were waiting for a table at the Spotted Pig in Manhattan. On this occasion, the wait would only be 45 minutes so we decided to hunker down and see what all the hype was about. On the walk to the restaurant, I clocked an eco-chic spa (Savor Spa + Boutique) just a block away. (I clock spas and cosmetic stores like a sixth sense.) During the wait, I decided to check out Savor Spa and see what kind of goodies I could get my hands on. As soon as I walked in the door, the woman at the front desk greeted me wearing the most beautiful coral lip color. Needless to say, I walked out of the spa with a new lipstick.
Although I knew the lipstick wouldn’t look the same on me, I was willing to take my chances and I’m glad I did. Since the lipstick is not completely opaque, it blends in with my natural lip color and is very flattering. The color I picked out is Karma Chameleon and is described as a fiery coral hue but reminds me more of watermelon. I think it would do Boy George proud. I watched the music video for Karma Chameleon a few times before writing this post, and you should do yourself a favor and do the same!
Here’s why I’ve been wearing this lipstick for two weeks straight and plan to finish the whole tube:
- Organic ingredients
It is packed with certified organic ingredients including sesame, rose hip and papaya oil which makes me feel good about putting it on my lips. I’m glad that Ilia doesn’t just use organic ingredients but makes a formulation that stands up to regular lipsticks on the market.
- Easy to wear
While it is a bright color, it is not completely opaque so it is a more conservative way to wear a vibrant hue. It has a semi matte finish so it’s not overly shiny which also makes if feel understated and comfortable for every day wear.
- Fades evenly and nicely
This isn’t a long lasting lipstick but it fades gradually into a pretty and subtle stain on your lips. I’ve had this last up to 4 1/2 hours through brunch and some drinks before needing to reapply. But I’ve also had it last only about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. It depends on the workout you give it. It will last through a meal eaten with a fork, but if you’re diving into pizza or tacos (which I tested out) it won’t last through the meal. For full day wear, I find myself applying it 3x per day.
- Great texture
It’s not heavy or thick. It just feels like a thick colored lip balm which is perfect for summer wear.
- No pencil sharpener needed
It has a twist-up applicator so no need for a pencil sharpener when you’re on the go.
- It’s nourishing
You don’t need to layer a balm underneath unless you want to. It has some nourishing and moisturizing ingredients that will do the trick, but if your lips are at all dry this will flake. I make sure to do a good lip scrub if I have any dryness to prevent this.
At $24, it is likely I will repurchase or try out more from the brand.
